Thinning the Veil (ToV) is a guided team process that helps Regnum Christi members accompany one another through the real situations of their lives. In each session, one member brings a genuine challenge or opportunity they are facing, and the team walks with that person in prayer, listening, and questioning until a next step begins to emerge. The name speaks to what we hope happens in the circle: as we pray, listen, and ask together, the veil between our everyday concerns and God's action in them grows thin, and we begin to see our lives the way Christ sees them.
The Rule of Life describes the team as the natural setting where life in Regnum Christi grows, and it calls members to help one another on the journey of sanctification, formation, and apostolic work (RL 13, 14). The Encounter with Christ guidelines encourage teams to move toward personal situations rather than abstract or external discussion, so that accompaniment becomes concrete. Thinning the Veil was developed to answer that call. It replaces the earlier case study format with a structure that keeps the focus on a real person, a real situation, and Christ's real presence in the room, while forming every participant in the skills of Christian leadership, accompaniment, and mutual support.
A full session takes about forty minutes and moves through eight steps. The facilitator opens by reminding the circle that everything shared stays within it. The team then names a virtue or skill they will practice together, and the presenting member shares the challenge or opportunity they have brought. The circle pauses for a minute of silent prayer, entrusting the conversation to the Holy Spirit before anyone speaks.
The first round of questions follows. These are open questions meant to understand the situation more fully, not to solve it. The facilitator then checks in with the group on how the conversation is going and invites the team to name, in one clear statement, what the member's challenge or opportunity truly is. From there, the circle asks deeper questions that help the member discern their own path forward, and the facilitator gently invites them to name what is emerging as their next step.
The session closes in two movements. In the individual round, each person shares the fruit of the session for their own life, because the grace offered to one member is rarely meant for that member alone. Finally, the team discerns a shared apostolic resolution, carrying what they have received out into their families, parishes, and communities.
Thinning the Veil forms participants in five skills of accompaniment. We learn to Hold the Space, creating a prayerful and safe environment where a person can speak honestly. We Listen to Connect, attending to the person rather than preparing our response. We Stay in Their Story, resisting the urge to shift the conversation to our own experience. We Release the Fix, trusting that the member and the Holy Spirit will arrive at the answer, not us. And we Ask Powerful Open-Ended Questions that open new insight rather than lead toward a conclusion we have already chosen.
Thinning the Veil directly satisfies the Regnum Christi Element of Accompaniment, giving members a concrete, structured way to live the close and stable personal attention that the Rule of Life and the Statutes describe (RL 13, SRCF 35.1). It also addresses many of the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes outlined in the Regnum Christi Formation Pathway, so members who participate regularly are growing in mind, heart, lifestyle, and action at the same time.
